Two men were busted during a drug deal, but what led to their arrests will get them recognition in the “Weird Criminal News” headlines.
One of the men accidentally dialed 911 during the drug deal, police say. This allowed authorities to record the exchange and make the arrests.
The two men allegedly had crack cocaine and a large amount of cash on them.
“We have been trying to figure out how to classify it,” said Leavenworth police Chief Patrick Kitchens. “It might be the first case where a person accidentally dialed 911 and got arrested.”
It all began last Thursday night. Police say they received a 911 call and the dispatchers could hear a disturbance.
“They heard arguing or yelling over the phone call,” Kitchens said.
Dispatchers used their available technology to trace the cell phone call to a specific neighborhood in north Leavenworth. Officers were then sent to the scene.
A dispatcher continued to monitor the telephone call as officers searched the area.
“You could hear on the phone call the suspect saying, ‘Oh, there goes the cops,’” Kitchen said. “So that brought the officers’ attention to the two gentlemen.”
Those two men were then arrested, and police reportedly confiscated $2,500 in cash and six grams of crack cocaine.
Jesus Suarez and Jesus Santos, both 25, are jailed on five charges each.
