Convicted sex offender Gary Warren Scarfo is accused of exposing himself outside of his car in a WalMart Supercenter parking lot in Stuart on August 13, smiling and masturbating at passing customers, according to Port St. Lucie police. A victim said the 61-year-old Scarfo "appeared to be watching the WalMart customers as he was masturbating," according to the police report. "[Victim] stated that the male suspect made eye contact with him and [the suspect] smiled, continuing touching his penis," wrote officer Luis Pagan, Jr. "[Victim] immediately turned the vehicle around in order to retrieve the suspect's vehicle tag number." Pagan wrote that WalMart provided security video that, though it did not clearly show the suspect's body, did show a man fitting Scarfo's description standing by a car when the victim and his wife drove by, then turned around to collect the tag number. Scarfo was arrested Wednesday after police tracked the tag number of the car the victim thought Scarfo was driving, a beige Toyota Camry. The tag number led to a man who didn't match the description of the suspect, but he did offer police a helpful bit of information: he let his neighbor, Gary Scarfo, use the car whenever he wanted. Scarfo was previously convicted of indecent exposure in 2008, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's sex offender database. This time around, he faces one misdemeanor charge of exposure of sexual organs. Port St. Lucie County Jail officials say Scarfo has already posted $35,000 bail, but he was not immediately reachable for comment. WalMarts in Florida are no stranger to red light activity near their blue light specials. In 2010, 28-year-old Lakewood Ranch substitute teacher William Tyler Black was arrested for allegedly masturbating in a toy aisle thanks to some help from a Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue, and in July 49-year-old David Marks was accused of exposing himself to a family inside the store.
