Magnolia Shorty's Husband Murdered in New Orleans

Almost a year has passed since Magnolia Shorty was gunned down in New Orleans on Dec. 20, 2010, and now friends and family members of the slain rapper are feeling the loss of her husband, Carl Bridgewater, who was shot Thursday (Nov. 17).

Bridgewater, 31, became the 181st homicide of the year for the city of New Orleans.

"Senseless," his uncle, Terry Bridgewater stated about the murder.

The victim was recently released from jail, after being arrested in March 2010, for cocaine possession with intent to distribute. In November 2001, Bridgewater was taken into custody for distributing heroin and possessing a firearm -- he was a felon. The District Attorney's office shot down the charges stemming from 2001, according to records.

In Magnolia Shorty's death, the 28-year-old rapper and another man were shot dead while riding in a vehicle in New Orleans. They were pronounced dead at the scene.

PAST

Last December, Cash Money rapper Magnolia Shorty was murdered in a double homicide shooting in eastern New Orleans. Four months later, police officials are on the hunt for a local man who may have answers in the unsolved murder case.

New Orleans police officials have begun the search to track down 24-year-old Brandon Singleton, who they believe has information on the murder of Magnolia Shorty, born Renetta Lowe, and Jerome Hampton, the other murder victim. Both victims were shot multiple times before their car crashed into the gate of an apartment complex near Downman Road in eastern New Orleans on December 20, 2010. The two were pronounced dead on the scene.

The 28-year-old rapper was signed to Cash Money records in the early '90s after being introduced to label CEO Birdman. She was recommended to him by members of the Hot Boys, who she knew from growing up in New Orleans' Magnolia Housing Projects.

Magnolia Shorty released her debut album, 'Monkey on the D$ck,' with the label in 1995. She was at work on her sophomore effort when the shooting happened. A private funeral service was held for the late rapper in her hometown on December 30, where attendees included Lil Wayne, Mack Maine, Juvenile and B.G.

The New Orleans Police Department is currently offering a $2,500 reward for tips that lead to the arrest of Shorty Magnolia's murderer.
