Along the lining of our intestines and colon there are millions of (B)acterial strands. Realistically, it is necessary for our bodies to inhabit both good and bad bacteria because they aid our bodies in defense of foreign hosts and keep our immune systems functioning properly to become immune against certain harmful diseases. However, having too much bad bacteria can cause serious harm , therefore we must feed our bodies with good bacteria called Probiotics.
According to the World Health Organization probiotics are “live microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host”. Probiotics help intestinal bacteria perform their tasks more efficiently. They take over when your intestinal bacteria are over worked or weakened or even destroyed by antibiotics, stress, poor nutrition or any other factors.
The beneficial bacteria aid in digestion through the production of enzymes, stimulate the immune system, produce antimicrobial substances and compete against invading micro organisms. The intestinal flora represents a first line of defense against microbes and other infectious germs. Probiotic benefits include regulating intestinal health, improving digestion, supporting immune functions, and detering certain pathogens. Probiotics make up 70% of our immune and digestive systems.
Quick tips:
1. Sources: You can acquire priobiotics by eating foods such as natto (fermented soybeans), kimchi, sauerkraut, miso, tempeh, yogurt and by drinking Kefir. You can also use probiotic supplements such as Bio-k (which I love) and a brand called New Chapter has amazing products but as always DO YOUR REASEARCH.
2. Uses: Aids in digestion, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, indigestion, chronic inflammation and boosts immune system function.Start using probiotics preferably 24 hours prior to the use of prescribed antibiotics and continue using them even after you finish the antibiotic doses. For yeast infections swab a tampon in a bottle of Bio-K and insert it into the vagina leaving it in over night (this works magic) in addition to consuming probiotic supplements of your choice. Probiotic supplements are most effective on an empty stomach and should be taken on a daily basis for maintenance.
I wish you a blessed holiday to you and your family. Remember: when you FEEL better you DO better.
Continued light and love.
