I’m just going to dive into this weeks subject…
If you are not taking fish oil supplements, no matter your age, ethnic background, gender or status. RUN to your nearest health food store and get some. Scientific research continues to support the conclusion that the Omega 3 essential fatty acids are extremely important to our good health.
Follow me as I provide you with some brief information on Omega 3 essential fatty acids, their benefits and how to choose the right brand for you.
There are now health experts who consider that an inadequate supply of the Omega 3 fatty acids in our diet is one of the most serious health issues confronting our generation. Most young adults have the mentality that vitamins and supplements should only be consumed by middle to late age adults. WRONG!!! The key to the best optimal health is PREVENTION so start early and fish oil supplements should be at the top of your list.
There are such things as “good fats” low triglycerides and “bad fats” high triglycerides that our bodies consume; its pretty obvious which ones are better for us. Omega 3 fatty acids consist of DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) and we should have an adequate amount of both in our body. There is now solid research supporting the higher benefits of a higher intake of the Omega 3 fats and deficiency can increase our risk of stroke and heart attack and even death. It is now well known that DHA, the most important of the Omegas, is the most prevalent fat in our brain, and that an adequate supply may well influence the development of cognitive abilities in infants as well as improve the memory for adults young and older. DHA is also particularly prevalent in the retina of the eye and research shows that an adequate supply of DHA in the diet helps with the development of childhood vision as well as helps protect the elderly from the most common causes of blindness.
As a whole, fish oils also have beneficial effects on cancer, lupus, depression, arthritis, skin beauty, psoriasis, pregnancy, anti-inflammatory and immune health. Fish do not actually produce Omega 3 fatty acids on its own, but instead accumulate them by consuming microalgae or prey fish like sharks and swordfish that have accumulated omega 3 fatty acids. Since the average person does not consume enough fish in their weeklh diets, daily intake of fish oil supplements are imperative to our health. When deciding which fish oil supplements to purchase take into consideration the amount of DHA/EPA in each capsule as well as the quality and cleanliness of the brand. Be sure that of the two DHA has the highest content of the capsule. There should be a minimum of 280 mg of DHA in one capsule. Therefore, never choose by price, just be sure that there is at least 2 1/2 times more DHA than EPA in each dosage. There is growing evidence that fish are, in many cases, contaminated with various industrial toxins such as Mercury, dioxane and PCBs. It wuld be best to use supplements whose fish were “wild caught”. I also would not suggest using manufactured fish oils, which you will see in most of the brands at GNC.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK!!! Most companies guarantee extra processes that their fish go through to ensure its quality and that the oils are not rancid. So don’t just grab the cheapest supplements on the shelf. Its your health that is at stake, and you need to make sure you are doing your body good.
I hope you enjoyed your turkey dinners and vacation. Remember: when you DO better you FEEL better.
