WOW VERY SAD

MANORVILLE, N.Y. (WABC) -- A mother and her 7-year-old son are dead after a deadly accident on Long Island.

For Jay Trinca, it couldn't get any better than this, seeing his 7-year-old son Jason light-up after winning a go-kart race.

But this weekend, his dreams for his young family were shattered, when little Jason and his mom were killed in a horrific automobile accident.

Keri Trinca's car was struck broadside as she crossed route 111 in Manorville, Long Island.

The family's two other children, 4-year-old Maria and 2-year-old Christopher, were critically-injured.

They were airlifted to University Medical Center in Stony Brook.

Sue Swezey is the children's great-aunt.

She says Jay Trinca must grieve the loss of his wife and son, while praying for the recovery of the couple's younger children.

"It's a tragedy, I don't know what to say," Swezey said.

It happened at 8:30 on Saturday morning.

As Keri Trinca's car crossed the highway, it was struck by a van travelling southbound where the speed limit is 55 miles per hour.

The intersection has a traffic light, and which driver had the right of way is still not clear.

Doctors say the couple's two younger children are showing signs of improvement and are expected to make a full recovery despite their massive injuries.

"Adults would not do as well as these children are doing," Dr. Parker said.

The driver of the van and his passenger were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

Suffolk County Police are still investigating and no charges have been filed.

Detectives are asking anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the Seventh Squad at 631-852-8752 or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.

All calls will be kept confidential.
