Tayshana Murphy killed in New York

One of the top girls basketball stars in the city was shot dead early today in her Harlem building after she and her friends got into a deadly beef with a pack of young thugs.

Tayshana “Chicken” Murphy, 18, was partying with pals about 4:15 a.m. at the Grant Houses at 3170 Broadway in Morningside Heights when the other group arrived and an argument started.

Murphy, who was wearing a hoodie, may have been mistaken for a man as she tried to get away - but was shot once in the head.

A crowd of 75 neighbors gathered outside the girl’s home screamed and became hysterical with grief as her body was taken from her apartment to the Medical Examiner’s van about 10 a.m.

“Back up, back up, that’s my baby,” said Tiffany Holston, Tayshana’s mom, who kissed the body as it was placed in the van.

“Thirty minutes before [she was shot] she was dancing and smiling with her friends, talking about the new school year and team,” said Holston. “I have to hold it together, I’m in my own zone. You see how everyone loved her.”

The 5-foot-6 Tayshana was a senior at Murry Bergtraum High School, a scholastic hoops powerhouse.

There were no arrests and the investigation is ongoing.

A scouting report on ESPN.com said: “Murphy has a lot of bounce in her squat, strong 5-7 body. She also has very good speed and nice, quick feet at the defensive end, where she can be quite effective if she elects to compete. Her 3-point shot is fairly stationary, but Murphy has nice form on a jump shot to just shy of the arc.”
