Michael Baldwin, News 12 Long Island Reporter, Finds Baby, Babysitter Dead

wow shocking

Suffolk County Police arrived at the home of News 12 reporter Michael Baldwin Thursday night to find a tragic scene.

Baldwin's one-month-old boy and his babysitter, Teresa Coffey, were found unresponsive at the reporter's Greenlawn, NY home, Huntington Patch reported. According to police, while an autopsy is still required to determine a cause of death, it appeared that the child may have been asphyxiated, as Coffey was found lying on top of the child.

According to the Wall Street Journal, at this point authorities do not believe this was the result of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Baldwin had returned to the house at 9:30 p.m. Thursday night worried because he hadn't heard from the babysitter all day, only to find himself amidst what appeared to be a shocking accident.

"There is no reason to believe this is anything other than a terrible accident at this point in time," Suffolk Police Lt. Det. Gerard Pelkofsky said at an afternoon press briefing. "We are investigating to make sure it is not negligence."

The infant was pronounced dead upon arrival at Huntington Hospital, while Coffey, 39, was confirmed dead shortly later.
